Since Ringo is the first cat we've had with black fur, I've found it interesting to look at, especially in the sun. Many years ago, I read that no cat has truly "black" colored fur.
It seems this is true. His fur has brownish color and you can even see faint tabby stripes near his neck (this is a photo of his rear flank, not his neck).

Black fur also fades in the sun, it turns brownish as it fades. I had a black kitty (with a few dots of white on his chest and belly) ages ago and he loved the sun so much that he always faded, especially in the summer. I wasn't about to deny him the sun to stop the fading! If he didn't have sun, he'd sit with his head under a lampshade when it was lit, for the heat I assume, lol.
Love that you can see stripes in certain light! You can on my grey boy too (grey cats are actually dilute black)

My human's dad's cat is pretty solid black... although I imagine in bright sunlight she may look just a touch brownish.
Yeah, even my furs have a little tinge of brown in them...especially in the summertime when I lay in the sun more.
