Update on Sadie

A few weeks ago, I shared that Sadie was not quite herself--she's been licking off her fur and hiding more often than usual. We took her to the vet to rule out medical issues, and the vet suggested starting her on Prozac.

When the vet gave me the prescription, she said that Sadie was sort of "inbetween" doses because of her weight. If she didn't progress after a few weeks, I could increase the dosage (from 1/4 pill to a 1/2 pill, once daily).

She's been a good girl in pilling, and we've started to see moments of her old self returning. But, I came home from work last Friday to half of the fur on her tail being gone.

I increased her dosage the next day. These kinds of medications take time to work, and I need to remember to be patient. It makes me very sad to see her doing this, and I wish she could tell me what was wrong.

She isn't crazy about allowing photographs lately, but I got one photo using a freeze-dried chicken heart as a bribe. Note how much fur is missing on her flank, bum area, and tail. Her entire belly is bare too.

We love you, baby girl, and hope you feel better very soon.

Oh, sweet Sadie, we are so sorry to hear what you are going through. Purring the kitty prozac kicks in and helps.

The waiting for the medicine to work is frustrating, but I'm hoping that Sadie finally gets some relief from her anxiety. There are some great herbal remedies on the market, I've heard.

Poor Sadie, I hope she feels better soon. I wonder if she has an allergy and the itchiness makes her pull the fur out?

Poor thing. It can take 4-6 weeks for the Prozac to really start working. We hope it helps Sadie.

Have you talked to your vet about the possibility of allergies? My Moko gets them every year about this time. However, this is the worst she's ever been. She has two huge bare spots on her back (and has licked them until they bled and then got all oozy) and the last two inches of her tail is missing all the fur on one side. She had a bit of a fever (possibly from the infection on the licked spots - and possibly from a UTI, since she has suddenly been peeing where she shouldn't - and we still haven't been able to get a clean urine sample). However, the vet gave her an antibiotic injection and a second shot that was a steroid (to help stop the itching). I took her back for a second shot four days later. By the time the vet was able to fit her in, I had put the soft e-collar on her and had sprayed some OTC first aid spray on the spots. The scabbing came off at the vet and her skin beneath was healthy and perfect. I took the collar off her since I think that was partly why she was peeing (she especially didn't want to use the covered litter box with it on). I took the cover off the box and left the collar off, but she has licked the spots again - not as bad as before, but I am still not happy. I just can't wait until the weather cools off and the allergies subside. This is the worst she's been, and seeing that she came to us six years ago last week, she had issues when I got her and every year since. Again, this was the worst. While she didn't have fleas or mites, the vet did put a flea preventative on her - to be sure. You sound like you're going through almost exactly the same thing - at least with the licking off of fur. Hopefully we'll both get it under control soon.
