Well, I ordered a different computer. I went with a refurbished Dell, which is half the price of a new one. (Our current machine is a measly three years old.) It also comes with Windows 7, which we have and like. (I am not liking the reviews so far on Windows 8.) Having the same system should make transferring files from our external easier too. Here's hoping it comes quickly--our old machine is slowly dying. On Sunday, the media card reader stopped working and yesterday one of the USB ports gave me an error.

Good luck! It seems the PCs are made to only last about 3 or so years anyway. Actually, all the tech gadgets we love aren't made to last at all. Makes the companies a lot of money... and the e-waste disposal companies a lot of money too. (So is my cynical $0.02.)
