How our cats got their names

Tucker--the first time I held him, he was a little scared and tucked his head into the crook of my arm.

Benny--Jim's favorite comic book character is Ben Grimm (the Thing), but he wanted something with an "ee" sound at the end, so Ben became Benny.

Sadie--A name I have always liked. Also, I have long joked about naming our future cats with a Beatles theme. Sadie comes from the Beatles song "Sexy Sadie."

How did you name your pets?

Interesting. Kirby was names at his foster home and he responded to it, so we left it. Angel, went with out a name for two weeks because we were not sure she was staying with us. We tried every girl name that would go with Wizard and the only one she responded to was Angel.

Wizard named himself. He could disappear in an instant, He always knew when we need his curdles and purr. He was a wizard in our hearts, too.

Minchie was always named Minchie so mom decided to keep it. His full name is Minchie Meow.

Laila is named after Laila Ali, Mohammed Ali's daughter who was also a boxer. Mom was playing with her when she first came home and she looked like she was boxing at the toy. Laila Ali was mom's favorite celebrity dancer on Dancing With the Stars a few seasons ago so that's what she decided to name her. It's perfect for her since she's quite the queen of the smackdowns in our house.

Childhood cats: Holly because we got her at Christmas time, and it seemed the perfect 'ends in Y' name for that time of year. Daisy - because we joked about all sorts of garden flower names (Petunia, etc.) - and finally came up with one that ended in Y.

My current girls: Aerin from my favorite books by Robin McKinley. Cassie, partially from Cassandra because I was watching Stargate SG-1 around that time, and partially because I always liked the Chessie-cat name from the railroad logo and was going for a somewhat similar sounding name.

Octavian was named by his foster meowmy through Siamese Rescue. He had two look-a-like brothers, and she named them all after Roman generals - Octavian, Marcus, and Lepidus - because she thought they needed strong names. We were going to re-name him, but couldn't agree on a name we both liked, so Octavian kind of stuck.
Emmalee, on the other hand, is one of our favorite girl names. We debated between that and Olivia, but Emmalee just seemed to suit her. My hubby insisted on the weird spelling - "Emily" is too boring according to him. (insert eyes rolling)
