I don't make my cats wait outside - well except the kitten room. Skippy does that outside of the kitten room when I'm 'in there too long'
I should note that the door is open to the bathroom--he just prefers to wait just outside of the door.
Mine usually come in with me, Sammy will jiggle the door handle if he wants to come in.
