Diamond and his neuter: What is cryptorchidism?

I got a little surprise when I picked Diamond up from the shelter after his neuter: He had cryptorchidism and his neuter was a bit more involved than expected.

What is cryptorchidism?
It means that one or both of the testicles did not descend from the abdomen into the scrotum.

What does that mean?
It means that the vet needs to look for the missing testicle(s). Diamond's was still in his abdomen--the other was where it was supposed to be. He also got some stitches (that I did not get the opportunity to get a look at).

Some facts I learned:
• Cats with this condition are much more likely to develop cancer--all the more reason to get your pets neutered.

• This is a hereditary condition, so again, neutering will stop the cat from passing it to other kitties.

• It affects only a small population of cats (thankfully).

• Unless both testicles are removed, the male cat will still produce hormones and have intact cat behaviors (fighting, spraying, etc.)

Wag walking (some interesting stories from cat owners in the comments)

Diamond got some pain medication from the shelter and we kept him overnight in a carrier. He ate pretty well during the evening but by morning he was refusing food and was in a small ball in the back of the carrier. . .so we released him into the backyard.

He received a rabies vaccine, an ear notch, and a neuter surgery tattoo. We hope he returns regularly for food and he'll always be welcome at our house.

We hope to see you soon, orange boy. He did not visit this morning, but we left a bowl of food out just in case.

Diamond! Well, the worst is behind you now, boyfriend, and you'll be back at your usual food bowl soon enough. When we TNR'd Hobo, he took off and didn't appear again until dinnertime. I was a wreck all day, worrying about him, but he came back. Loved that cat!

Diamond, we hope everything will be alright in the end. He looks so sweet in the photo. We hope he is back around more often for some delicious food and to see how he's doing. Thanks for the share. Have a great day.

Many, many years ago my sweet boy Baryshnikat was in the same condition: one descended and one in the right place. He did very well in recovery. I hope the same for Diamond.

I am purring that Diamond is back to normal, and visiting, very soon!

Incidentally, my nephew, Crazy Louie had the same issue. That is why he was neutered and went to someone as a pet (and altered show cat), instead of going into a breeding program. I think he lucked out! He gets all the fun and no hormones.
